It's not useful to put yourself on the line, life or death, do or die. You are an artist, not the art. The only way to be vulnerable and go to the edge is to realize that if your art doesn't work, you'll be back tomorrow with more (better) art.

On the surface, the selection above seems a sort of predictable "stick with it" kind of advice, but Godin is really talking about how we conflate ourselves with our art, our work. When we hear no to our work, we hear no to us. And when we hear yes, we want to believe that not just our art, but ourselves, has being approved of. Best to separate ourselves from our art, Godin says, to know that our value comes from the making of the art, not the reception of the art.
